BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS!

I just accosted a pregnant women in Waterstones - I know I shouldn't but I couldn't help it! The books available were a disappointing array of main stream 'nice' books, not one evidence based or challenging. So here is my list of the TOP 5 books for pregnancy and beyond:

  • Expecting (Anna Mcgrail and Daphne Metland)
  • The New Pregnancy and Childbirth (Sheila Kitzinger)
  • Ina May's Guide to Childbirth (Ina May Gaskin)
  • Stand and deliver (and other brillinant ways of giving birth) (Emma Mahony)
  • What mothers do (espcially when it looks like nothing) (Naomi Stadlen)

Wouldn't it be a move forward if these were found in all major bookshops!

Are you a midwife considering working in independent practice?

After working hard as an independent midwife, my wonderful midwifery partner Kate (mentioned in Solace’s birth story) has decided to put her IM hat to one side for a while - life on-call can be very hard – but it is also wonderfully rewarding working in this way!

I am looking for a new partner who is passionate about midwifery, normal birth and providing women with all the support they need to make decisions about pregnancy, birth and the early postnatal period. Contact me if you think you might like to work in this way.

NCT Home Birth Support Group

As a midwife, NCT teacher home-birth mum, I am passionate about supporting parents to make an informed choice around place of birth: myself, another NCT teacher Sarah and a small group of volunteers run a monthly home birth support group. Usually held on the third Thursday of the month, 8pm – 10pm in the North Surrey area, this informal group offers support, birth stories, access to resources and the chance for couples to really explore home birth as a normal choice! Email homebirth@friedonions.net for further information.
