Being an independent midwife is a great privilege and a really fantastic job – we love what we do and love working with families during such a special and life-changing time.
Continuity of carer is hugely important – it enables you to build a strong and supportive relationship with the midwife who is going to support you during the precious birth of your baby. We work together as a team, with your named midwife providing most (if not all) of your antenatal and postnatal care.
As individuals we are fun and have good sense of humours (we think!), believe in speaking our minds (when necessary), advocating for women and hopefully bringing to parents and families a level of care that we would expect ourselves.
Angela Horler, RM (Dip HE)
Antenatal Educator (Dip HE)
For as long as I can remember, pregnant women and pregnancy have fascinated me, and during my first pregnancy it was clear that midwifery was where my heart was; however, it was not until the birth of my third child - a wonderful ‘rite of passage’ and a fantastic home birth - that I could no longer avoid my vocation to be ‘with woman’.
During my midwifery training, I had the privilege of attending midwifery workshops at ‘The Farm’, home of Ina May Gaskin and ‘Spiritual Midwifery, which was - and still is - my inspiration, keeping strong my deep belief in women’s ability to birth their babies. Upon qualifying, I chose to work outside of the NHS so that I could practice holistic, one-to-one midwifery care and have only ever practised independently.
I have 3 energetic and loving children, two cats, and most importantly, a wonderful and supportive husband who is as passionate about midwifery as I am! We live in Shepperton, Middlesex.
I am an NCT trained antenatal teacher. I am a member of IM UK , the RCN, the ARM , the NCT and AIMS.
After working hard as an independent midwife, my wonderful midwifery partner Kate (mentioned in Solace’s birth story) has decided to put her IM hat to one side for a while (life on-call can be very hard!).
Very occasionally we may need to use the services of an additional midwife. Our back-up midwives have the same philosophies as we do, work well with us and are passionate about the care they give.

“Being pregnant with your first baby can be exciting, but daunting with all the choices you need to make. We knew we had struck gold when we got to experience Angela's unique combination of knowledge and genuine care for the birth process. She took time to explain all the choices we had, and together we took positive, meaningful steps towards achieving a calm and peaceful birth. “

“Seeing the same person for every appointment and knowing that this person, is going to be sharing your birth with you, was invaluable to me. Once my daughter was born, Angela was there helping me every step of the way; showing me how to bath my baby, helping me breast feed and supporting me far and above what I had expected! Midwifery is more than just a job for Angela; it is a passion and a vocation.”
